Pele and Garrincha, Gods of Brazilian Football

I ran across this BBC documentary about Pele and Garrincha put together in 2002. The film starts off in the 1950's, as Brazil lost in the Maracana versus Uruguay. It follows the careers and lives of Brazilian football stars Pele and Garrincha.
When they played on the same team, they never lost a game but by themselves their lives and careers took diffrent paths.

Pele and Garrincha are both footballing legends in Brazil. The film uses archive footage and details the story of these two men and explains how one became the World's Greatest Soccer player and the other died a broken alcoholic at the age of 49.

See the video below or HERE I highly recommend it!

South Africa's World Cup has its 32 teams

On Friday December 4th we will find out how the group stages will look for the XIX World Cup to take place in South Africa next Summer.

We now know the 32 countries that qualified for the world Cup:

For CONCACAF it was The United States, Mexico and Honduras.

For CONMEBOL it was Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

For Africa it was Algeria, Camerun, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and the host South Africa.

For Asia it was Australia, North Korea, South Korea and Japan.

For UEFA: England, Denmark, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Italy, Greece Serbia, Portugal, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands,

Oh and Last but not least New Zealand.

There are really no "Virgins" that will participate in the South African World Cup though some might argue Slovakia and Serbia are first timers. The Slovaks were part of Checoslovakia and the Serbs have a long tradition with Yugoslavia and the last WC played as Serbia and Montenegro.

Who will win? My bet is with Spain and Brazil!

Miami Ultras on TV, pictures and video. USA can't hold the lead and fall to Brazil

The Miami Ultras appeared on Univision during the USA vs Brazil game and Republica Deportiva. It was a fun event that also saw Miami FC players Danny Vasquez and Richard Perdomo interviewed by Presidente Fernando Fiore.

Here are a few pictures and video (In Spanish)
For more pictures and video head over to the Miami Ultras site.

A special thanks to Miami FC Media Relations/PR Manager Ignacio Rodriguez-Argote for putting this together.

While at Univision's studio we watched the USA drop a 2 -0 lead in the second half, a heart breaker for the USA fans in the studio. Could this be time for a change of the U.S. head coach? I mean it's great we got to the final, but we need to remember we got there by mere circumstance on goal aggregate, We lost 3 of the 5 games we played at this tournament... Still, falling to Brazil by 3-2 isn't as bad as losing to them 3-0 like we did in the first round.

Soccer Fans! Miami FC returns home to play the now traditional Fourth of July game against the first place Puerto Rico Islanders. This game will be played at FIU Stadium and will include fireworks immediately after the game. For more info go to the Miami FC website and get your tickets!

Vamos Miami! Let's go Blues

Be sure to check out a great piece written by Robert Scorca in the first of a multi part series detailing the history of Soccer in South Florida called "Humble Beginnings". They didn't start in South Florida at all, it began in Washington and here is a little of the story:
The history of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers goes back before Fort Lauderdale.
The team even goes back before the North American Soccer League. The N.A.S.L.
was soccer in it's heyday. Players like Pele, George Best, Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore, "Nene" Cubillas, etc. all graced the fields in the United States and Canada but I am getting ahead of myself...

Brazilian Futbol Cheerleaders! by Burrito with picture goodness

Burrito is a pervertido! As Burrito do his daily porno search he find article, if that what you call it at (Must be 18 and over to click on link or Burrito hit you on head with quesadilla!) "Fleshbot" and there he see Brazilian Futbol Cheerleaders! A Caray! Burrito hope Miami FC and USL and MLS can one day have cheerleaders like this. Here is what it say:
"Brazil has given us so many things—the thong bikini, the Brazilian wax, Gisele Bundchen—and now, finally, we've been able to repay them by sending an American tradition down south. Yes, Brazil now has cheerleaders.
Currently, the ladies who cheer for Brazil's football teams are following closely in the American tradition—they'd all fit in quite well at an NFL game—but we're hoping that, as the cheerleader tradition becomes more and more a part of Brazilian sports tradition, we'll get to see a little more Brazilian flavor in the outfits. Hey, we know we'd feel some serious team spirit if we could cheer along with a thong clad pep squad!"

Ok no more words, see these hot mamacitas!

For more pictures go here (remember over 18 or Burrito hit you on head with quesadilla!)

Talk about pervertidos... Burrito going to see "The Pervert's Guide To Cinema" on Friday April 10 at 8:30 pm read about it here: Perverts of Miami, Unite and Take Over!

Miami FC to decide if they play 2009 season this week, plus Miami Ultra's Soccer-A-Thon pictures

This morning I woke up sore, sun burnt and dehydrated. All these are the consequences of participating in a 24 hour Soccer-A-Thon organized by the Miami Ultras in their quest to save Miami FC . I didn't play all 24-hours, maybe I played six, but I've got to give credit to Pieter Brown and Julio Caballero for sticking it out and organizing this event, not to mention the rest of the Miami Ultras and fans that showed up.

For those that didn't attend you missed out playing with Miami FC staff, including Brazilian Captain and World Cup Champion in 1994 Zinho, current Miami FC coach who even though suffering from an injury scored at least 3 goals and set up numerous others. Another notable attendee was one time Miami Fusion player Diego Serna who spoke to Miami FC staff (We hope to see him sign on for the team!)

Miami FC staff present stated that sometime this week we should know if the "Blues" will play this season. Traffic Sports, owners of the club had set a 5,000 season ticket goal for the Miami FC staff and are working diligently to get to those numbers.

Miami fans, we urge you to go to the Miami FC site and purchase your season tickets to ensure Miami has professional Soccer in the years to come.

Judge rules TV is an "essential good" needed to watch Soccer!

As I wrote on the Orlando Sentinel Blog, I hope one day the United States will make Football...ummm, Soccer, an "essential good" like a judge claims in Brazil! (At least I wish... ) From Reuters 'Oddly Enough'!

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A Brazilian judge awarded $2,600 in damages to a man who sued a store for not replacing his faulty television set, ruling that it was an "essential good" needed to watch soccer and a popular reality TV show...

Here is the rest of the article:

Grandfathers of Football! Who's the oldest active player? Find out...

So I was kind of bored, twiddling my thumbs or chewing the fat as an old Army Sargent of mine used to say... and I remembered I had written about a couple of old fogies still playing football, so I said to myself; "Self, let's look up and see who in tarnations is the oldest player still active". So here we go... I was surprised to see so many older players still out there and doing what they do best, which is kicking a little ball and making tons of mullah for a living! What a great life they have and I envy every single one of them. Most of the Grandfathers of Football are actually Keepers. Who better to start this off then our very own Kasey Keller, soon to be a Seattle Sounder who at 39 seems to still be on top of the game. Another team USA veteran is Brad Friedel who will be 38 next May and he's still playing strong. To conclude with the USA, striker Brian McBride turned 36 in June. But thats nothing ladies and gents, nope, we are just getting started. Teddy Sheringham who now plays for Colchester United is 42 and plans to call it quits this year. AC Milan star Paolo Maldini turned the big 4-O this June and he claims to be ready to end it this year too, but a little birdy told me he might stick around another year just for s#@*! and giggles!Colombian Rene Higuita is 41 and he recently stated he wants to play till he turns 45. Other players getting up there in age are Juan Carlos Henao 37, Carlos Navarro Montoya who will soon turn 42. Ecuadorian keeper Jacinto Espinoza is 38, Peruvians Jorge Soto is 37, Roberto "Chorillano" Palacios is 36 and striker German Carty is 39 . Colombian Defender Ever Palacios is also 39. Paraguay's World Cup Veteran Jose Saturnino Cardozo is going to be 37 as well as his WC teammate Carlos Gamarra.MLS has a legion of old timers led by Canadian Pat Onstad 40 and Mexican veteran of a million battles, the original "Emperor" Claudio Suarez who will also turn 40. OK, and no one is better then Ezra! (get it?) St Vincents very own Ezra Hendrickson is 36 and will soon be followed by ex L.A. Galaxy Abel Xavier, Preston Burpo and Diego Gutierrez. Brazil's Romario de Souza Faria better known as... wait for it, "Romario" (Sometimes I just kill me!) is 42. He will retire with a game between Flamengo and Barcelona in Rio's Maracana stadium. His former Brazil teammate Cafu is 37 and Paulo Sergio Rosa aka "Viola" is 39.But the king of the old men of football is Brazil's oldest active player Pedro Ribeiro Lima who is 58! Lima currently plays for Desportiva Perilima and he recently said that he wants to keep playing until he is 60. He beat out previous record holder English winger Stanley Matthews, who represented Maltese outfit Hibernians until he reached 55, and the ageless Cameroonian Roger Milla , the oldest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history, he was 42.
